2023 Traveling Exhibition
Theme: Open
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is holding a traveling exhibition, which will run March-July 2023 in three different states: Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado!
This is an open exhibit, but with 1st and 2nd Prizes, as well as a People's Choice Award! There will be a jury to decide who will win 1st and 2nd place. We will be photographing all submissions and displaying them in a printed catalog, as well as on our website! You can vote for your favorite art piece either by submitting it at the exhibit in your state, or through a google form that we will send out to you. All participants will receive a printed catalog automatically. Anyone else who would like to receive one in the mail can order them directly from the chapter-details to follow.

Registration Fee (to cover shipping and catalog):
- For RMC members: $50 for first entry, $25 for each additional submission,
- For GBW members: $65 for first entry, $30 for each additional submission.
- For non-members: $85 for first entry, $40 for each additional submission

Judges:
We will have two judges from Utah and two from Colorado, all who will be able to evaluate your work in person. Judges are still welcome to submit work, however they will not be eligible for prizes. We are so grateful to our judges, please read about them below:
Madelyn Garrett (UT):
Madelyn Garrett is an artist, art historian, former rare book curator and book conservator at the University of Utah Marriott Library, where she established a nationally recognized book arts program; led the Marriott Library’s own Red Butte Press fine press printing program; and conceived and developed a statewide K-12 history-of-the-book program for Utah’s children. She is most interested in the historical book, and her work often references the books and book forms of the past.
Christina Thomas (UT):
Christina Q Thomas was first trained as a book conservation technician while a student at BYU from 2000 to 2004. She later completed the two-year bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston in 2008. After completing conservation internships at Haverford College, the Boston Public Library, and the LDS Church History Library, Christina joined the BYU Library Conservation staff in 2009.
Karen Jones (CO):
Karen has been a book and paper conservator in private practice in Denver for more than 30 years. A professional associate member of the American Institute for Conservation since 1990, she is also employed at Jefferson County Public Library. A long-time member of GBW, she’s served as a board member of the Rocky Mtn. chapter in every role, currently as treasurer.
Rhiannon Alpers (CO)
Rhiannon Alpers, is a papermaker, letterpress printer, and bookbinder/book artist. Rhiannon is currently working as the Director at InterOcean Studio in Englewood Colorado. She has both a BA and MFA in Book and Paper Arts. She has exhibited internationally, and her edition and one-of-a-kind artist books are produced under the Gazelle and Goat Press imprint, located in Denver.
