KAREN JONES

TITLE:  "Before(s)"

YEAR CREATED:  2017

DIMENSIONS:  16.8H x 10.7W x 1.9D cm

MATERIALS:  salvaged book boards, Kozo paper, goatskin spine, Cave Paper enclosure

Before conserving a book, I pay attention to all the evidence attached to it, including its history; how it was used; how it functions; materials used in fabrication; its current condition. I also document the object with digital images before and after treatment. This construction is a homage to the “before(s)”. It is made of salvaged book boards (late 18th - early 20th c) and discarded endbands. I pasted “before” images on some of the boards. The board “leaves” are bound using the “Mongolian Stiff Leaf” structure, a traditional technique resurrected and refined by Hedi Kyle.

DEAN ROBINO

TITLE:  "Lucretius on Particle Physics, Selections From De Rerum Natura"

YEAR CREATED:  2022

DIMENSIONS:  24.1H x 15.6W x 1.9D cm

MATERIALS:  Handset Centaur, Sabon Antiqua, Dante, illustrations printed from polymer plate and linoleum, on Holcomb Superfine; Quelquefois Press, Berkeley, California; accordion bound in Japanese bookcloth

Lucretius’s poems about Epicurean atomic theory including the Swerve in Latin and translated by the artist, hand drawn illustrations by the artist from modern physics, mathematics, and cosmology. Lucretius’s descriptions of the first bodies of nature and how they act foresee 20th and 21th century ideas, including such principles as matter not coming from or going back to nothing, particles too small to sense or see, the void in the universe and within atoms themselves, the randomness underlying events. The behavior of these particles, especially in Lucretius’s Swerve underlying their randomness, is consistent with quantum mechanical concepts.

CARLA TENRET

TITLE:  "Prayers from the Ark and the Creatures’ Choir" by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold

YEAR CREATED:  2022

DIMENSIONS:  26H x 10.8W x 1.6D cm

MATERIALS:  Handset and printed by 10 Ray Press (Carla Tenret) at Quelquefois Press (Mary Laird), Berkeley California. Printed on Somerset Book paper, using Spectrum, Dante, and Sabon Antiqua type. Illustrations and calligraphy by Carla Tenret, printed from polymer plates.

The illustrations decided the format of the book. Much thought was given to placement on the page and sometimes on multiple pages. We decided a lovely red-brown mixed ink would be the base color for all the illustrations in the book. For text we added black. And then, more black for the title page. It was interesting to work with the placement of the text and illustrations and initial drop caps. All told each page had four runs of color. The covers are oak board printed on Elephant Hide paper, then adhered to lig-free twenty-point boards.
