MEL ANTUNA HEWITT

“The Picture of Dorian Grey"

Year Created: 2021

Dimensions: 22.8Hx15.2Wx6.4D

Materials: goatskin leather, marbled papers, silk thread, acrylic paint

French style binding with goatskin leather, laced on boards and built up cover relief. The front cover features a frame that is gradually disappearing away into the board which speaks to Dorian’s losing of self as he makes certain choices to keep his youthful beauty.

I feel this binding fits the theme of “Smoke and Mirrors” literally. Mirrors are often used in association with vanity and obsession with appearing youthful. The frame on the cover, whether used for pictures or a mirror, indicates this in conjunction with Dorian’s own obsession with his appearance.
