HEATHER DOYLE-MAIER

TITLE:  "Rest(less)"

YEAR CREATED:  2015

DIMENSIONS:  12.1H x 35.6W x 4.5D cm

MATERIALS:  used pillow (cover and lining), book board, thread

Rest(less) documents the sleep attempts of two middle-aged bed companions through a long, interrupted night.  Upper and lower hand-stitched lines trace the progression of the couple through sleeping (occasionally) and waking up (many times), contrasting their trials with a consistent, restful "sleep wave" in the middle of the page.  Utilizing the quilted cover and lining of a well-used pillow as its base materials, the book stands not only as a narrative of a single episode but incorporates the physical and psychic traces of many restless nights.

JIM FRAZER

TITLE:  "A Planet Found Upon the Path"

YEAR CREATED:  2022

DIMENSIONS:  43.2H x 22.9W x 5.1D cm

MATERIALS:  found rocks digital prints, board, book cloth, paint, acrylic rod, and thread

A Planet Found Upon the Path is about a very small ringed planet and its moon that fell to earth and were found by me while out walking. The pages show the path transforming into outer space and the planet finding a home among the stars and historical maps of the universe.

Doors in each page open to plates from the Harmonia Macrocosmica, a celestial atlas from 1661. The text on the accordion enclosed in the innermost  compartment is The SPHERE of Marcus Manilius, a translation of the first book of the didactic poem Astronomica, from the first century CE.

DIMENSIONS:  27.9H x 36.2W x 3.8D cm

MATERIALS:  digital prints, board, kozo tissue, paint, copper leaf, mica powder, brass rod, and thread

In 2022, Permacrisis was named as the word of the year – we’re told this is the new normal. The situation doesn’t feel normal, though. The feeling is more that things are coming apart – not holding together. In these images, traces of light revealed by moving the camera visually represent the tearing apart of space and the landscape; the unease we feel because things are not right with the world. The delicate hair-like traces also represent a hope for beauty coming through from beyond. That which is usually stable tears, and what’s beyond is revealed.

YEAR CREATED:  2011

DIMENSIONS:  20.3H x 13.3W x 5.1D cm

MATERIALS:  Copper, brass, copper leaf, mica, inks, transfers

Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman’s modern steampunk classic, reveals a disturbing alternate world of “London Below,” inhabited by shady characters, speaking rats, and mysterious supernatural beings, set against a backdrop of the mazes of London’s Underground. Design binding/altered book. Shaped boards are clad with distressed copper leaf and edged with brass-nail detail. Window panels are covered in mica and framed with rivet detailing. Keyhole clasps are of stamped brass. All pages are treated with inks and transfers. Included are additional pages with handwritten excepts of the “mental diary” of the protagonist. Endsheets are reproductions of an early 20th-century London Underground map, showing the nonexistent British Museum station, pivotal to the story.

KAREN HANMER

TITLE:  "A Natural History of the most remarkable Quadrupeds, Birds, Fishes, Serpents, Reptiles and Insects" by Mrs. Mary Trimmer.

YEAR CREATED:  2022

DIMENSIONS:  14H x 9W x 4D cm

MATERIALS:  Atlantic salmon parchment processed from raw skin by the binder. Ties and sewing supports of salmon leather. Pink linen sewn endbands laced in. Label inkjet-printed with calligraphy by Beth Lee.

I channeled much of my early COVID restlessness into fish shopping; processing fish parchment; searching for small, fish-themed antiquarian books; and exploring modest, conservation-friendly structures to wed these activities. For this binding I dyed the salmon skin in chlorophyllin. The skin is pieced together with parchment tackets painted with shell gold.

KAREN HANMER

TITLE:  "The Vicar of Wakefield" by Oliver Goldsmith. New York: George Long, 1823.

YEAR CREATED:  2020

DIMENSIONS:  15H x 8.5W x 2D cm

MATERIALS:  Text block sewn unsupported, laced with Cave paper straps into limp case of Katie MacGregor paper.

This binding was in response to a student asking for an example of non-structural, decorative lacing on a paper case, presented here in the form of a stylized “V” and “W”.

The 1766 novel The Vicar of Wakefield was hugely popular in Victorian England. It was name-checked in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and included in the library of the ill-fated Franklin expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. A random opening reveals the compelling prose, “‘Villain indeed,’ cried I”.

The kaleidoscope presentation begs to be picked up, unfolded, turned, twisted, tumbled, and contorted in every way to explore the many nooks, crannies, and hidden crevices. Each perspective presents additional words, resulting in a cacophony of imaginative sounds.

TITLE:  "Star Gazer"

YEAR CREATED:  2022

DIMENSIONS:  13H x 9.5W cm

MATERIALS:  Digitally printed on 14 pt. coated cardstock, hand-cut and assembled by hand. Two-color laser-cut portfolio, custom storage box.

A celestial journey through an endless universe to discover how to make sense of the future.  Star Gazer transforms into the infinite inky expanse of the universe, where a sweeping constellation of colorful hand-cut paper stars sweeps through the book--page-to-page, diving through pages, around pages, splitting into divided channels, crisscrossing top and bottom, popping off the page surface, floating above the page, and finally converging in an explosion of celestial brightness and a final question: in charting a life, are the answers upward or inward?

LANG INGALLS

TITLE:  "Ferveur" by Charles Juliet, lithographs by Sufan Oh.

YEAR CREATED:  2023.

DIMENSIONS:  9.3H x 10.7W x 1.5D cm

MATERIALS:  Full-leather laced-in boards binding in deer skin, bound montage sur onglets and with paper cover inclusive. The cover design uses onlay pieces of skivved gator, with seven embroidered lines in monochromatic hue. Design elements include hand-tied silk endbands, natural edges, and flyleaves of burgundy Roma. Hand titled in black across the full cover.

A beautiful poem on inner expansion accompanied by stark black gestural lithographs. I chose a design that is free-form and playful, hinting at the passion in the poem; embroidery connects through all things.

LANG INGALLS

TITLE:  "Paralogisme" by Serge Pey, lithographs by José Manuel Broto.

YEAR CREATED:  2023

DIMENSIONS:  9.2H x 10.7W x 1.6D cm

MATERIALS:  Full-leather laced-in boards binding in aqua buffalo, bound montage sur onglets and with paper cover inclusive. The cover design uses onlay pieces of skivved alum-tawed pigskin, with an embroidered arc in white. Design elements include hand-tied silk endbands, natural edges, and pastedowns and flyleaves by Hook Pottery Paper. Hand titled in rose gold across the full cover.

A poem on the recognition that one holds no account towards things in life that one simply cannot be responsible for—as death or beauty. I chose white designs on a soft blue leather to depict ways of entering this understanding: arcing or floating; the dynamic interior lithographs lent to these gestures as well.
